Start with a communication task

Use a concrete situation, such as explaining a complicated decision to a colleague. Mercury's symbolism can prompt questions about how you gather information, choose words and test understanding. Compare the interpretation with your actual process: do you use examples, a diagram, a careful definition or a quick conversation? An unfamiliar description is a reason to question the reading, not your experience.

Traditional Western rulership assigns Mercury to Gemini and Virgo, with exaltation also in Virgo. These are classifications inside the tradition. They do not mean those signs own communication or that people with Mercury elsewhere are less articulate.

A connection to the Sun needs an actual orb

Mercury stays relatively near the Sun in Earth's sky. A shared sign therefore does not, on its own, establish an unusually close conjunction. Read the angular separation and the configured aspect threshold. Sky Degrees supports conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions, using the average of the two configured planetary orb values.

The orb is a reading rule, not measurement uncertainty. Widening it can add a displayed connection without changing either planet's position. Keep both the exact separation and threshold in your notes when comparing charts or another calculator.

Retrograde describes apparent motion

A retrograde Mercury has decreasing geocentric zodiac longitude at that instant. The planet has not reversed its physical orbit around the Sun. Traditional interpretations attach meanings to this apparent motion; the astronomy does not establish that messages will fail or contracts will go wrong. A daily sample also cannot locate an exact station time.
