An inventory should answer a practical question
A list of possessions or supplies is useful only when it helps a decision. You might need to know what is available, what requires repair or what has already been promised elsewhere. Mercury's symbolism can frame the distinction between collecting information and organizing it so that someone can use it.
Choose a small set of resources, such as materials for a hobby or equipment for a shared task. List the item, its condition and where it can be found. Add only the detail needed for the next decision. This is a practical record exercise, not an assessment of wealth or competence from a house.
Make the assumption behind a number visible
A cost estimate may look precise while depending on an uncertain quantity or an old price. Separate recorded facts from estimates and show what would change the result. Clear language makes a resource decision easier to inspect, while a confident presentation can obscure a weak assumption if nobody asks where the figure came from.
Take a modest planned expense and write the amount, its source and the date checked. Mark anything estimated. If you explain it to someone else, include the uncertainty rather than replacing it with a rounded certainty. The chart cannot validate a price, forecast an income or recommend an investment.
Ownership and symbolic rulership are different relationships
The second commonly concerns personal resources, whereas shared terms and obligations may bring in eighth-house questions. A useful record can distinguish the resource you control from an agreement involving others. Actual ownership comes from facts and documents; an astrological ruler does not establish a legal entitlement.
House two is not Taurus by default, and Mercury's presence does not make it the house ruler. Calculate the relevant boundaries from the birth time, location and selected system, then read the actual signs. Changing a house system can change occupancy without changing the planet's astronomical longitude or your resources.
A CONCRETE EXAMPLE
Synthetic chart example: Mercury in the 2nd house
Use the invented chart input 2001-02-03 at 05:21 UTC in Greenwich, UK (51.4779° N, 0° E), with the Tropical zodiac and Alcabitius houses. No real person or life story is attached to this example. The coordinates were actually calculated with Skyfield 1.55 and JPL DE440; they are geocentric positions for this specified moment.
The calculation places Mercury at 0°38′ Pisces (330.627161° zodiac longitude) in House 2. Its Alcabitius interval starts at 9°17′ Aquarius (309.275038°) and ends at the House 3 cusp, 22°04′ Pisces (352.061317°). The unrounded longitude lies inside that interval and is 21.352° from the nearer boundary. Rounded display labels do not decide the house.
Keep the same time, coordinates and zodiac, then change only the house system: Whole sign places Mercury in House 3; Equal house places it in House 2. The planet's longitude stays the same in all three calculations. This comparison shows why a house number must retain its house-system label. The true Ascendant is 0°39′ Capricorn, and the true Midheaven is 6°01′ Scorpio; those angles remain distinct from a system's numbered cusps.

Does Mercury in the second house mean I earn through writing?
No. Communication is relevant to many activities, but the placement cannot identify an income source or assign an occupation. Actual work, skills, agreements and opportunities establish how someone earns.
Can this placement tell me whether a purchase is wise?
It cannot evaluate a purchase. Check the actual purpose, cost, alternatives and conditions. The reading may encourage a clearer comparison, but it does not supply the missing facts or guarantee a financial outcome.
