Give an introduction enough context to be useful
An introduction can be clear without becoming a complete account of your identity. Consider what the other person needs to know for the next exchange: your role, your question or the reason you are there. Choosing that information is a communication task, not a test of whether you can sound interesting immediately.
Prepare two versions of an introduction for a real upcoming situation. Make one a single sentence and the other three sentences. Keep the purpose the same, then notice which details earn their place in the longer version. This helps you adapt to the setting without inventing a more impressive description of yourself.
Questions can create room for an accurate response
You may need information before deciding how to join a task or conversation. Asking a focused question can make that need visible. A Mercury reflection here can examine whether you understand the request, rather than treating uncertainty as something to hide behind fluent language or an immediate opinion.
Before answering an unfamiliar request, restate the part you understand and identify one missing detail. Ask for that detail if it changes the next step. The result may be a shorter, more useful response. Neither pace nor confidence proves competence, and the chart cannot establish a communication or learning condition.
A first-house Mercury is not the Ascendant
Mercury is a planet with its own longitude; the Ascendant is a local horizon angle. Occupying the first house does not automatically place Mercury close to that angle. Whole sign houses begin at the start of the rising sign, so an occupant can be well away from the exact rising degree.
Read the degree, sign and house as separate fields in a chart calculated from reliable time and location. House one is not automatically Aries, and Mercury's sign dignity cannot be inferred from it. Keep the chosen house system in any comparison, particularly when an approximate birth time changes the placement.
A CONCRETE EXAMPLE
Synthetic chart example: Mercury in the 1st house
Use the invented chart input 2001-02-03 at 07:33 UTC in Greenwich, UK (51.4779° N, 0° E), with the Tropical zodiac and Alcabitius houses. No real person or life story is attached to this example. The coordinates were actually calculated with Skyfield 1.55 and JPL DE440; they are geocentric positions for this specified moment.
The calculation places Mercury at 0°38′ Pisces (330.640797° zodiac longitude) in House 1. Its Alcabitius interval starts at 11°06′ Aquarius (311.093678°) and ends at the House 2 cusp, 20°32′ Pisces (350.529690°). The unrounded longitude lies inside that interval and is 19.547° from the nearer boundary. Rounded display labels do not decide the house.
Keep the same time, coordinates and zodiac, then change only the house system: Whole sign places Mercury in House 2; Equal house places it in House 1. The planet's longitude stays the same in all three calculations. This comparison shows why a house number must retain its house-system label. The true Ascendant is 11°06′ Aquarius, and the true Midheaven is 8°32′ Sagittarius; those angles remain distinct from a system's numbered cusps.

Does Mercury in the first house make someone highly intelligent?
A chart does not measure intelligence. This placement can supply questions about how you approach communication, but actual reasoning, knowledge and performance need their own evidence. Verbal ease is not a substitute for that evidence.
Is this the same as Mercury conjunct the Ascendant?
No. A conjunction requires a stated proximity to the angle. The first house is a wider interval under the selected system. Compare Mercury's longitude with the actual Ascendant degree before making the narrower claim.
