Home is a lived arrangement
A useful question is, ‘What helps this place support my daily life?’ You might examine a household agreement, a familiar ritual or the practical work of maintaining a home. These examples ground a fourth-house reflection without assuming everyone experiences a conventional family or a stable place to live.
Schools differ in how they assign parental significations between the fourth and tenth houses. State the tradition rather than presenting one parent assignment as universal. The chart cannot establish an absent parent, a family conflict or the accuracy of an inherited story.
The IC is a specific angle
The IC is opposite the Midheaven: add 180° to the MC longitude and wrap within 360°. House systems may use this angle as a boundary, but whole sign and equal houses use their own rules. Keeping the actual IC distinct from the fourth-house cusp prevents a boundary label from replacing an astronomical angle.
The fourth house is angular in the house classification. That term does not mean every planet anywhere in a whole sign fourth house is tightly conjunct the IC. Proximity to the angle requires comparing the actual degrees.
Preserve uncertainty in the foundation of the chart
Reliable local time, historical time zone and birthplace are necessary for personal house and angle calculations. If the time is only approximate, inspect how the possible interval affects the fourth house. Entering noon creates a hypothetical chart; it does not recover an unknown family or birth record.
A CONCRETE EXAMPLE
Worked arithmetic example: an equal-house fourth cusp
Start with an invented Ascendant of 14° Leo, longitude 134°. In equal houses, the fourth cusp is three 30° steps later: 134° + 90° = 224°, or 14° Scorpio. The next cusp is 254°, so a planet at 230° belongs to this fourth-house interval.
These numbers derive an equal-house cusp only. They do not calculate the true IC: that angle must come from the chart's local geometry. Calling 224° the IC without calculating it would conflate two distinct quantities.

Is the fourth house always Cancer?
No. Cancer is a zodiac sign; the fourth is a house counted within a chart. Its sign and ruler depend on the birth data and house system.
