The person, not a complete personality label
A first-house reading can begin with how you enter a situation: introducing yourself, starting a project or deciding what you are prepared to take on. A planet in this house adds a symbolic function to that discussion. It does not determine your appearance or establish a medical fact about your body.
The first house is angular. In astrological interpretation, angular houses are often treated as prominent places, but prominence is not the same as success or importance as a person. A chart with no traditional planet in the first house still has an Ascendant and a first house.
The Ascendant and first-house boundary are different concepts
The Ascendant is the eastern intersection of the ecliptic and local horizon. Equal houses start their first house at that degree. Whole sign houses instead begin at 0° of the Ascendant's sign, leaving the exact rising degree somewhere inside the first house. Keep the angle visible when comparing those methods.
The first house is not automatically Aries and does not automatically have Mars as its ruler. To use traditional house rulership, identify the relevant sign in the chosen system and then its traditional planetary ruler.
Check the time before reading the placement
The Ascendant depends on the birth instant and location. If a recorded time is approximate, compare the plausible interval rather than treating a displayed minute as certainty. Sky Degrees requires a birth time and supports eight house systems; changing a system changes boundaries, not the planet's sky position.
A CONCRETE EXAMPLE
Worked arithmetic example: before the Ascendant, inside the first house
Suppose the Ascendant is 14° Leo, or longitude 134°, and an invented Sun position is 8° Leo, or 128°. Whole sign places the first house from 120° to 150°, so this Sun is in the first house.
Equal houses start the first at 134° and the twelfth at 104°. The same Sun at 128° is therefore in the twelfth equal house. This is a labelled boundary exercise, not a calculated person's chart. The Sun and Ascendant retain the same degrees in both versions.

Is my rising sign the same as my first house?
The rising sign contains the Ascendant. It forms the entire first house in whole sign; other systems define house boundaries differently. A sign, an angle and a house are related but distinct.
