An exact trine is 120° of shortest zodiac-longitude separation. The calculator reports the difference from that angle as orb and lists the relationship only within the selected planetary moiety-orb limit. Changing an orb setting can change the list without changing a planet's position.
A dated sky sample illustrates geometry, while your natal result requires your recorded birth instant. House topics additionally need the birth place and house system. Applying or separating uses stored motion estimates; it does not search for an exact future event.

At 1988-09-15T12:00:00+00:00, the production Skyfield/JPL DE440 ephemeris puts Venus at 8°36′ Leo (128.605600°) and Mars at 8°48′ Aries (8.796643°), using tropical geocentric apparent longitude. Their shortest separation is 119.809°, 0.191° from an exact 120° trine. The same instant and positions were checked through the complete monthly ephemeris response.
